Everyone knows Alice slept with two guys at one party.

But did you know Alice was sexting Brandon when he crashed his car?

It’s true. Ask ANYBODY.

Rumor has it that Alice Franklin is a slut. It’s written all over the bathroom stall at Healy High for everyone to see. And after star quarterback Brandon Fitzsimmons dies in a car accident, the rumors start to spiral out of control.

In this remarkable debut novel, four Healy High students—the girl who has the infamous party, the car accident survivor, the former best friend, and the boy next door—tell all they know.

But exactly what is the truth about Alice? In the end there’s only one person to ask: Alice herself.

REVIEW

Truth About Alice received a lot of buzz when it first came out and from that alone I was hesitant to read it. We all know how these hyped books are – some are phenom while most are just highly talked about flop. I’m always at a fence with these reads which is why it took me longer to finish and review Truth About Alice.

First of all, Truth About Alice is a great book that depicts stereotypes to the extreme. It’s about a girl and something happening in a party wherein events spiral down to the worse for the people involved. Alice, the center of all the ruckus, took it head on but I thought she could have handled it better. I was anticipating a heightened and dramatic arc for Alice but the realistic story that the author used was brilliant in its simplicity. I think what made it difficult for me to truly love this book was the multiple POV – it’s a love and hate relationship. One one side I completely love it as it shows multiple sides of the story from the people involved but part of me hated it as it was difficult to maintain the flow because the story came from all sides.  For the same reason as having multiple POV, it was hard to connect to the characters because of its different voice. The idea of such is indeed effective in showing us all the angles but it also lost me in the sea of voices.

Truth About Alice is not just about a girl and a rumor gone wrong, it also shows us the brutal truth on how the teenage society really works. It is about friendship, loyalty and acceptance. Regardless of how people see it, stereotypes really do exist and what goes in the circle is as nasty as any rumor being spread. This book explores a lot of issues and I believe should be read by every teenager because of how realistic and honest to the truth it was.
